ARDSLEY, N.Y. — I recently ventured to the Big Apple to dissect the talent at the inaugural Adidas Select Series Championships. Here’s the final segment of my Class of 2021 rundown, highlighting the top prospects in the eighth grade division, and breaking down their performances…

Frankie Imbruglia won over the crowd at Adidas Select Series Championships with his flashy style of play and crafty finishes at the rim. A competitor with outstanding toughness, the aggressive backcourt prospect provided needed scoring for the Mass Rivals, and proved to be a disruptive defender as well. Imbruglia’s size may require that he soon slide the lead guard role full-time, and in order to do that he’ll need to begin learning the nuances of the positions, as well as refocusing his efforts on playmaking for others. Deceptive quickness and great feel separate Imbruglia’s game from his Class of 2021 peers at this stage.

Alex Karaban transformed during the inaugural Adidas Select Series. His confidence took a major leap, and with that improved swagger, the young forward became the unquestioned leader for his club by the time the circuit concluded. His foot speed and explosiveness will need to improve relative to his elite peers, but Karaban is a fluid athlete with good body control, and is working to enhance his ability to create his own shot. The Massachusetts native is unselfish, but confident with the ball, and is also an efficient perimeter shooter. He’s currently tracking as one of the top prospects in New England’s 2021 class.

Nick Marshall was a welcomed backcourt addition for 6th Man Sports at the Adidas Select Series Championships. His offensive versatility as a ball-handler and scorer earned him a lot of minutes and he also showed the quickness necessary to play at a few different gears. Hailing from the DMV, an area known for producing talented lead guards, it will be important for Marshall to continue sharpening his all-around game in order to avoid getting caught in the region’s positional logjam.

Jai Smith established himself as a standout performer during the Adidas Select Series Championships with his athleticism and ability to elevate quickly off the floor to block shots and secure rebounds. He competed with an extra dose of physicality, which can likely be attributed to the varsity experience he logged during the high school season, and helped lead the New York Dragons to several marquee wins. Offensively, Smith looked comfortable facing the rim and can also catch and turn with his back to the basket, but he’ll need to continue developing his post skills to have a major impact on that end of the court.

Camaron Tongue debuted at the Adidas Select Series Championships with the Boston Bobcats and brought additional size and toughness to their roster. The stout forward has an impressive frame for a youngster and competed well on the glass throughout the event. He’s a valuable interior presence, but needs to be more aggressive, and learn how and when to take advantage of mismatches in the lane. An intriguing frontcourt prospect, Tongue should contribute immediately on the high school level, and will be heavily pursued as a Class of 2021 recruit in New England.
