Adidas Select Series Set To Debut In Northeast
January 20 2017
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. – Adidas’ presence continues to expand in youth basketball with the addition of the Adidas Select Series to begin 2017. Powered by Zero Gravity Basketball, the four-stop circuit series kicks off this weekend outside of Philadelphia, and then moves to the greater Boston area, with the regular season finale visiting Washington, DC. The much anticipated inaugural Adidas Select Series Championships are scheduled to be hosted at House of Sports, just north of New York City.
Now boasting more than 50 NBA athletes signed to their brand, Adidas is showing an additional commitment to grassroots hoops with their backing of this up-and-coming league, hoping to identify future standouts for high school events such as the McDonalds All-American Game, Adidas Nations, Adidas Gauntlet Series, and other events under the Adidas Uprising label.
More than 30 clubs, stretching from the Mid-Atlantic region to New England, will open the New Year with Adidas Select Series Championship aspirations in mind. The support of Adidas is further evidenced when considering the three featured grade divisions of the Adidas Select Series draw parallels between the famous ‘Three Stripes’ trademark and its divisions will be named for their most popular NBA athletes.
The eighth grade group, featuring the class of 2021, will have divisions honoring James Harden (Houston Rockets) and Kristaps Porzingis (New York Knicks). The seventh grade group, featuring the class of 2022, will spotlight divisions named for Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers) and Kyle Lowry (Toronto Raptors). Lastly, the sixth grade group will have a consolidated division named for Andrew Wiggins (Minnesota Timberwolves), featuring teams from the class of 2023.
The opening weekend of the Adidas Select Series will showcase a number of prominent match-ups, with competing teams hoping to secure early wins for the collective circuit standings, and players hoping to establish themselves individually for recruiting recognition and other honors. Among a competitive slate of games, it’s difficult to narrow down prior to tip-off, but here are five contests to be excited about during Session I of the Adidas Select Series…
6TH GRADE (2023): RIVERSIDE HAWKS vs BALTIMORE ELITE (1:20PM / SATURDAY / COURT 5)
Two respected programs from two basketball-crazed areas will meet early on in the Adidas Select Series. A New York versus Baltimore match-up is typically full of fireworks and it should be expected that both squads will be ready to compete. Every game will matter in the single-pool, ‘Andrew Wiggins Division’, so the young sixth graders in attendance must adapt and come to play early.
7TH GRADE (2022): S.K. ELITE vs TEAM BBC (3:40PM / SATURDAY / COURT 2)
S.K. Elite, named for former Big East standout and NBA journeyman Sean Kilpatrick, will square off against newly-formed Baltimore Basketball Club in another New York versus Baltimore showdown. Each team will have an opportunity to gain early footing in the talented ‘Damian Lillard Division’ which features a number of top East Coast clubs.
7TH GRADE (2022): NEW YORK JAYHAWKS vs ACHIEVE MORE SPORTS (11:30AM / SUNDAY / COURT 1)
The NY Jayhawks have quickly yet quietly assembled a respected organization in the Big Apple known for producing under the radar talent. Meanwhile, the hoops talent from Delaware is ascending quickly, yet is still being overshadowed by bordering states. Achieve More Sports can put The Diamond State on the national radar with a strong showing in the Adidas Select Series.
8TH GRADE (2021): NEW WORLD UNLIMITED vs 6TH MAN WARRIORS (2:30PM / SATURDAY / COURT 2)
The Maryland-based New World program surprised many with their immediate success on the Adidas Gauntlet circuit last year and have ample up-and-coming talent on their youth rosters. Meanwhile, former Maryland Terrapin great Byron Mouton is approaching a decade at the helm of the 6th Man Warriors organization. This Mid-Atlantic rivalry should help set the tone early in the ‘James Harden Division’ of the Adidas Select Series.
8TH GRADE (2021): TEAM FINAL BLACK vs BOSTON BOBCATS (2:30PM / SATURDAY / COURT 3)
It’s rare to see a program cross sneaker borders but that’s exactly what Team Final will do in their own backyard. The Nike-backed squad will likely have target on their backs for the Adidas Select Series and face a grueling Session I schedule. The Boston Bobcats are one of New England’s most talented and well-traveled programs but can gain acclaim beyond their region with a strong performance on the Adidas Select Series circuit.
